Statement of Purpose
Like most animators or what I believe exist in most animator are characters, stories or ideas that churn inside and surfaces on a consistent basis, I feel the need to animate one of those stories. Characters that have lived in my sketch books first as pictures then pictures with words recently the pictures have begun to move. I want to animate out of my own selfish need… to create, show and see responses. I want to compel another person to smile, shed a tear or gasp in surprise. Other artist that I’ve met say they create their art for their own gratification. “I don’t need my work to be shown to be happy”, they would say. I am not that artist/writer. I think Samuel Johnson said it best, “a writer only begins a book. A reader finishes it.” I want to start a short animated film.
For the past 14 years I’ve told many stories through animations, illustrations, sculptures and storyboards but they were never my stories. I’ve have helped develop and bring other’s ideas to paper, screen and the game controller. This has been exciting but felt I was never in control of the progression. I was babysitting –helping, teaching, taking care of but never can I call it mine. I want to have control from conception to the time the world can finish it.
From Toy Story to Charlotte’s Web I’ve loved fantastic stories. I want to animate a film that requires an imagination from the viewer. My name is Young Vo. I selfishly need to start gib·ber·ish an animated film for you to finish it.
Thank you taking the time to read this.
